A PENSIONER was threatened with a screwdriver by a man on his doorstep wearing a ghost mask.

The 85-year-old victim opened the door to the man, who was also dressed in dark clothing and wearing gloves, at 10.20pm on Monday.

The intruder barged his way into the pensioner’s home in Verdi Close, Brighton Hill, Basingstoke, shut the door and demanded the pensioner’s bank cards, claiming he needed to feed his one-year-old baby.

When the victim said he did not have any bank cards, the masked man ran off empty-handed.

The pensioner was not hurt but was left extremely shaken following the incident.

The mask-wearer is described as 17 or 18-years-old, of slim build, around 5ft 6ins and speaking with an accent.

Police officers believe he was familiar with the area.

Detective constable Ewan Gardner, from Basingstoke CID, said: “These were clearly the actions of a desperate man who may try to commit further offences, so he needs to be traced as soon as possible.

“I would urge anyone who saw anyone suspicious that evening to get in touch.

“Please also remember to use caution when answering the door, especially after dark, and to use a security chain where possible.”

Anyone with information should contact Det Con Gardner on 101 or the Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111.
