A LANDLADY claims she lost her job in a pub after a complaint was made about her disco.

Gill Matthews, 47, started at The Oak pub in Oakridge Road, Basingstoke 15 weeks ago, but has been ordered to leave by owners Silver Keg Ltd, after a noise abatement notice was issued by the borough council.

Mrs Matthews, who lived over the Oakridge pub, claimed the complaint came from just one individual, and in an attempt to stay on, she collected a petition from supportive customers.

She said she did not contravene noise regulations because she used a noise limiter to cut the music off when it reached a certain level.

She claimed Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council environmental health officers appeared satisfied with all her plans and procedures. However, on July 16, an officer reported the music being too loud between 9.30pm and 11pm.

Mrs Matthews said she was told by Silver Keg Ltd that she could transfer to another pub, but said she had no idea where this would be.

She added her teenage children moved to Basingstoke to be with her while she worked at The Oak.

She said: “It’s not right. I have been treated unfairly.”

Marion Healy, owner of Silver Keg Ltd declined to comment on the matter, saying: “It’s all between Silver Keg Ltd and the council.”

A statement from the borough council said that following complaints received about noise disruption, an investigation was carried out and abatement notices were served on the premises licence holder, the designated premises supervisor and Silver Keg Ltd, which leases the pub from Marston’s.

It added: “Marston’s has appealed and this will be the subject of a court hearing. There have been further complaints concerning excessive noise from the pub and we are continuing to work with those involved.”
