Hartley Wintney witnessed a unique event last Saturday as the town's junior football scene took centre stage.

For the first time in nearly a decade, both U16 teams of Hartley Wintney, the Eagles and the Falcons, faced off in the North East Hants Cup.

The Falcons emerged victorious in a thrilling 2-1 encounter.

Hartley Wintney senior club have witnessed many cup games against local opposition but on Saturday it was the turn of the junior club to be in the spotlight.

A much larger than normal crowd gathered at North Warnborough FC to see the Eagles start the brighter of the two sides.

After 15 minutes the Eagles took a deserved lead with a well worked goal and should have gone further ahead but for several outstanding saves by the Falcons’ keeper.

Shortly before half-time the Falcons equalised with a long ball over the top of the Eagles defence resulting in a calm finish by the Falcons’ striker.

The second half saw the Falcons grow in confidence and take the lead with 25 minutes remaining.

A well delivered corner was met in the air by the Falcons central midfielder and despite a late Eagles effort the Falcons ran out worthy winners.

After the game the Eagles Manager, Paul Turrell praised both teams.

He said: “There was obviously great interest at school and within the local community and the players handled the added pressure well. The game was played in good spirits and the junior club can be proud of the football played.  It was a great occasion and we wish the Falcons good luck in progressing further in the cup.”
