A NEW restaurant in Basingstoke has been handed a top food hygiene rating after an inspection.

Greek Street, in Wote Street, was given a five-star rating following a visit from food hygiene inspectors on January 15.

The restaurant, which also has branches at Chineham Shopping Centre and Basingstoke and North Hants Cricket Club which are also rated five for hygiene, opened its third venue in mid-February in the town centre.

Food safety officers rate food hygiene based on the handling of food, the cleanliness and condition of the building and facilities, and the officer's confidence in the establishment.

The cleanliness and condition of facilities and buildings, which includes appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, was rated ‘very good’.

Inspectors found that the handling of food at the restaurant, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage, was also ‘very good’.

The inspector also found that checks were in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, and that staff’s knowledge of food safety is very good.

The family-run business opened its first restaurant in the town in September 2020 and has since gone from strength to strength, opening a second venue at Basingstoke Sports And Social Club and its third restaurant in Wote Street this year.
