A PUB in Basingstoke has lost its five-star food hygiene rating following an inspection. 

The Golden Lion Pub, in Jays Close, Viables was inspected on Thursday, January 11 and was handed a three-star hygiene rating out of five. 

The pub offers a place for customers to enjoy a varied selection of drinks. 

Basingstoke Gazette: the Golden Lion pub in Jay’s CloseFood safety officers rate food hygiene by the handling of food, the cleanliness and condition of the building and facilities, and the officer's confidence in the establishment.

At the pub, it was found that hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage is 'generally satisfactory'.

It was also deemed that the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control) to enable good food hygiene is satisfactory.

The same was said about the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in the future.

The manager of the pub, Tracey Bowden, said: "Our kitchen wasn't open at the time of the inspection. I did have a five-star rating so we will be working hard to improve and open it again in the next few months."
