BASINGSTOKE and North Hants completed a league and cup double, as they retained the Guy Jewell Cup with an emphatic 89-run victory over Old Basing.

The Bountymen who were crowned Southern League Division One champions two days earlier, won the toss in front of a big crowd at May’s Bounty in the cup final on Monday.

Skipper Matt Deadman got them off to a great start with a quick-fire 28, which included five fours and a six.

When he departed Basingstoke were 41-2 and man of the match Ash Neal (67) and Neil Shelar (57 not out) then took up the mantle and added 112 for the third wicket.

Neal hit two sixes and nine fours in his 47 balls at the centre and put Basingstoke firmly in control.

Shelar was then joined by Joe Oates (16) as they kept the scoreboard ticking over and at the end, the Bountymen were 191-5 from their 20 overs.

Old Basing were always going to be up against with only 10 batters, after Ryan Murray dislocated a finger after bowling just one ball and was unable to bat.

Their reply then got off to the worst possible start as Neal (3-13) struck with the opening ball having Cam Hall trapped leg before.

Fellow opener Josh Silver (26) and Dan Belcher (19) got the innings going, but Matt Donaldson removed Silver on his way to 3-12 and the competition’s bowling award, while Ali Brown (2-25) had Belcher stumped by Laurence Benge.

After this, only Tom Jackson (12) and Darren Turner (15) made double figures as Old Basing ended up on 102-9.

Earlier in the day, Chawton enjoyed a 10-run victory over Hook and Newnham Basics B in the final of the Cyril Thompson Trophy.

Chawton looked to be heading for a modest total until Toby Charlton (42) and Mason Taylor (33 not out) put on a late run blitz, which saw them add 80 in the last seven overs.

This helped their side to 159-6 from their 20 overs. Ollie Webster was the pick of the Hook bowlers with 3-15.

Hook’s reply saw Kevin Light (34) and top batsman award winner Tom May (40) put on 65 for the first wicket.

Thomas Dyer (11) hit the only six of the innings before being brilliantly caught by Cameron Hamer with a one-handed diving catch to his left, which won the award for the magic moment of the game.

Alex Corbett chipped in with 20 and Billy Wyatt was 15 not out at the end as Hook came up just short ending on 148-9.

Chawton’s Hamer was the star with the ball as he finished with 5-12.
