THE return of Whitchurch Parish Summer Fete was hailed a success as it was held for the first time in a new home.

On Saturday, July 15, the fete took place at the Gill Nethercott Centre and Whitchurch Silk Mill.

Weather warnings provided the committee with difficulties in hosting the event outdoors and as a result, Whitchurch Methodist Church provided an additional indoor space which allowed the event to take place safely.

The weather forecast predicted heavy thundery showers and 50mph+ gusts.

The fete was opened by the Old Basing British Legion Corps of Drums who paraded from the town hall to Whitchurch Silk Mill. They were followed by a brightly coloured and imaginative ‘Parade of Little Monsters’.

The afternoon saw performances by Singing for Fun and a local Circus Skills Troupe.

In total over 1,000 people passed through the doors of the event, which was supported by a number of local businesses.

Over £8,000 was raised on the day, which will go to local charities and good causes.

Chair of the parish committee, Steve Court said: “The weather had been such a challenge for our team, however, the community really turned out in strength for the event.

"We are proud to support so many charities from our community who have done well with fundraising. We are excited to see the fete relaunched and are looking forward to future events.”
