Manny Lumsden, who hit an unbeaten century for Hook & Newnham Basics’ fourth team as a 13-year-old last season, was the batting hero of the club’s thrilling one-wicket win over promoted Southern Premier Division 2 rivals Portsmouth & Southsea at the KGV, writes Mike Vimpany.

Arriving at the crease with Hook II wobbling at 104-5 in response to Southsea’s 186, Lumsden struck a crucial 46 to take Basics to within one run of victory.

He lost three partners along the way but was caught out himself with the scores level. Ice cool Oli May hit the next ball for the winning four.

Earlier, Dan Moore (32) and Tom Dyer (37) made runs for Hook, with Ben Saunders and Ewen Mansford sharing six of the nine Hook wickets.

Shane Brewer (3-36) reduced P & S to 9-4 at one point before Dean Lee’s 60 helped the visitors to a competitive total.
