A COUNCIL bin lorry accidentally veered off the road and mounted a pavement just metres away from a play park in Basingstoke.

The Gazette has been informed about the incident that happened on Wednesday, November 9, in Skippetts Gardens by a resident who lives in the area, named Andrew.

Andrew said he returned home in the evening to see the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) Serco truck stuck in mud off the road in Skippetts Gardens.

He said: “I came back in the evening and I thought ‘oh my goodness what the hell is that’ and then I saw the bin lorry had gone off the road and churned up a load of the ground and got stuck.

“If the lorry had not got stuck it could have gone into the pay park which was just a metre away.”

Andrew said that in order to get the lorry out of the situation workers used rubbish including old tiles to place under the lorry to try and get it out of the wet grass.

A shocked Andrew told the Gazette that once the lorry was free, all the rubbish was left behind leaving him and his neighbours to clear up the mess.

Andrew contacted the borough council for answers but in response was told that the lorry could not get through because of the number of cars parked on the road.

He added: “That can’t be true because cars have been parked along the road for years and lorries have always been able to get through, we have never had a problem.

“What has happened is they messed up. She [the bin lorry driver] lost control of the lorry and she got it stuck almost one metre from the playpark.”

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council were contacted regarding the situation and confirmed the lorry got stuck on wet grass.

Waste and recycling manager Ashley Wild said: “We are aware of an incident where a Serco bin truck mounted the verge in Skippetts Gardens to negotiate parked cars blocking access.

"The wheels became stuck in the wet grass and the crew took action to enable the vehicle to move off the verge. Serco has informed us they are making arrangements to repair the verge.”
