A MAJOR roundabout in Basingstoke will be reduced to single lane for two nights as the Hampshire County Council is undertaking maintenance works.

A30 Brighton Hill Roundabout will open only a single lane from 8pm to 5am tonight and tomorrow night (Friday 17-18), the county council has revealed.

Motorists are advised to expect some additional delay during the course of the works.

A Hampshire County Council official statement read: “To facilitate the next stage of works, the roundabout line markings now need to be revised and the lanes narrowed to allow the working space required for construction.

During the course of the works the roundabout will be reduced to single lane running, and some additional delay should be expected.

The roundabout will revert to two lane operation during Saturday daytime and following completion of the works on Sunday morning.”

Milestone Infrastructure Limited has been appointed by Hampshire County Council to upgrade Brighton Hill for £20 million.

The council identifies Brighton Hill roundabout as a key junction on Basingstoke’s A30 South West corridor.

The corridor provides a critical strategic route between the M3 Junction 7, the Ringway and adjoining links to Basingstoke’s retail and commercial centre.

The local authority believes the route is a focus for future growth including 2,000 homes on strategic housing sites adjoining the A30. In addition, the route will also need to accommodate traffic from the nearby Manydown development to west of Basingstoke, where a further 3,500 homes are planned.

Currently congestion at the Brighton Hill roundabout regularly results in extensive queues and journey time delays.

The council introduced the scheme because it believes, without improvements, congestion will worsen as traffic levels increase from the planned development in the area.

The works for the roundabout in January this year.

It was during the piling works at Brighton Hill Roundabout that the contractors accidently damaged network cables, which led to the massive internet and phoneline outage in Basingstoke last week.
