THE A34 has been closed in both directions between Whitchurch and Bullington following a vehicle fire.

Emergency services have been on scene after a van was set alight along the stretch of road.

Police have said: “We have had to close the A34 in both directions between Whitchurch and Bullington this evening while a van that has set alight is extinguished.

“We appreciate your patience and would ask, where possible, you seek an alternative route while the closure is in place."

Crews from Whitchurch and Andover have responded to the van fire.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service has asked that people avoid the area.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Crews from Whitchurch and Andover were called to a van fire on the A34 southbound carriageway near Bullington Cross shortly before 15:30 this afternoon.

"Police colleagues are on the scene to implement a full road closure due to the smoke drifting across the carriageway.

"Specialist water carrier vehicles from Eastleigh and Fleet are also in attendance.

"Please avoid the area to allow emergency services vehicles access."
