MORE than 300 people gathered to celebrate the 10th anniversary of a centre that helps heart patients get back on their feet.

Basingstoke and Alton Cardiac Rehab hosted the party at the purpose-built Cardiac Rehab Centre, in Alton.

Since the charity opened the centre in 1997, to replace its small but pioneering unit in Alton Sports Centre, more than 5,000 patients have been treated there.

The charity's patron, Sir James Scott, Basingstoke and Deane's deputy mayor, Councillor George Hood, and staff and patients from the past 10 years were among those celebrating the anniversary in the sunshine with a buffet lunch and cocktails.

Dr Hugh Bethel - the original driving force behind the rehab programme - spoke at the event, along with Basingstoke hospital cardiologist and medical director Dr Andrew Bishop.

Following the party, Graham Webb, the charity's general manager, said that the event had highlighted the importance of the centre, but also the need for public support to continue running it.

He said: "Currently, it costs more than £150,000 per annum to run the charity, principally the centre - about £700 for every working day.

"Any help in the form of donations, joining the 100 Club, attending or assisting with events, or making bequests is greatly needed and will ensure that this invaluable service continues."

The charity treats patients in north Hampshire after illnesses such as heart attacks or heart surgery and helps them to regain their health and fitness through a programme of exercise, relaxation and education.
