A GROUP of work colleagues will be putting their best foot forward to help out one of their own who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The group, from the Chineham base of multi-national lighting company Tridonic, will be attempting a 21-mile long walk to raise money to help one of their colleagues Simon Davies.

Mr Davies, who works in the technical department at the company, was formerly an amateur triathlete before his diagnosis a year ago. He had been training for around four years, and had completed a number of triathlons before being forced to stop.

The Andover resident is a keen outdoorsman and was an avid cyclist, and he is looking to regain some of his independence.

Due to the way the tumour has developed, it has meant that Mr Davies is unable to use the left side of his body, therefore cannot use a regular bicycle.

This is why his workmates are doing the walk, to get a specially-tailored bike so that he can keep cycling.

Kirstie Abbott, marketing co-ordinator, said: “His diagnosis has meant that he is unable to use a normal bicycle, which has hit him hard.

“He can’t continue his training, and we really wanted to help him. We then had the idea to do a walk to raise money, as it would be the best of both worlds.

“It would be a real challenge that we would be able to do, as not many of us are particularly athletic.

“He is one of our most-loved employees, from both the customers who deal with him and for us as colleagues.

“He has been a real trooper, still coming into work with a smile on his face despite the treatments.

“It will cost around £3,000 to buy and modify the bike, as the controls need to be on the right hand side, and we are hoping to get some accessories if we go over the target.”

The team of about 25 colleagues, friends and family will be walking from Alton to Petersfield on Saturday, 29 September.

The group is looking for some help with getting supplies for the walk, including getting water and other necessities for the rest stops. To help, email Kirstie.Abbott@tridonic.com.
