CONCERNS have been raised about the proposed redevelopment of the current home of Basingstoke Football Club.

As previously reported in The Gazette, Basron Developments Ltd is starting work on what to do with the 71 per cent of land it owns on the site of The Camrose, in Western Way.

The proposal is to build up to 90 new homes, including three-storey flats, a 90-bedroom hotel and a drive-thru fast food restaurant.

Following a recent consultation event with the developers and leaflets being delivered to nearby homes, South Ham ward councillors want Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to use its 29 per cent of the land in a bid to help shape the land and not allow “unnecessary” development.

South Ham ward councillor Sean Keating said that with the proposal of flats and a hotel the developer is looking to build up in a condensed space to get as much financial gain as possible.

Cllr Keating said: “The idea of having flats on the land is just a way for the developers to build up to gain a few bucks.

“The idea of a hotel is also completely unnecessary as we already have two three-star hotels close to either end of Western Way already so why would we need a third?

“And by building up it would intrude on residents privacy for the people living in Mansfield Road, we just can’t see sense in this proposal.”

Leaflets outlining the proposed development were sent out to residents just over a week after it was agreed that the football club would be moving to the Hampshire FA Sports complex in Winklebury, once facilities at the site are ready to accommodate the club.

Cllr Keating, along with his fellow ward councillors Gary Watts and Colin Regan have said they will oppose the plans but welcome the development of more homes. Cllr Keating added: “We would support an application as South Ham would welcome more housing, but as the plan stands we are opposed to it.”

Basron Developments Ltd was approached for comment.
