SECONDARY school league tables, featuring the results of new, tougher GCSEs in English and maths, have been published today.

Six Basingstoke schools fell well below the government's floor standard of -0.5 for indicator, Progress 8 – which monitors a pupil's progress made in eight subjects between the end of primary school and GCSEs.

The lowest scoring school in the borough was Everest Community Academy in Popley, which had a score of -1.4.

Other schools which were rated 'Well Below Average' by the Department for Education on their Progress 8 score were Dove House School Academy, who scored -1.34, Fort Hill Community School, who scored -0.69 and Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College who rated -0.57.

Tadley-based schools the Hurst Community College and the Clere School were also well below the national average, both scoring -0.54.

Only two of the secondary schools in Basingstoke and Deane managed to match the national average.

These were Brighton Hill Community School, who scored -0.17 and Robert May’s School in Hook, who got 0.

The Costello School in Crossborough Hill fell just below the Progress 8 average scoring -0.19.

Four other schools in the area were below the -0.5 average. These were Whitchurch-based Testbourne Community School, who received -0.21, Aldworth School, with -0.35, Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School, who scored -0.41 and the Vyne Community School, with a score of -0.49.

Progress 8 takes into account the educational level at which pupils entered the school and the results of a pupil's best eight GCSE results.

Of those eight, two must be English and maths, which this time were made tougher and graded 9 to 1, instead of the traditional alphabetical system.

All other GCSEs are graded under the old-style alphabetical system.
