A WOMAN has been airlifted to hospital in a serious but stable condition follow a collision involving a car and a van near Hartley Wintney this morning.

The woman driver of a Mini Cooper was involved in collision with a transit van on the B3349, Reading Road, Mattingley at 8.31am today.

Her vehicle had come off the road during the collision, and gone down an embankment and was on fire with the driver trapped inside.

An eyewitness said he saw four or five people smash the windows of the Mini to try to help the woman who had become stuck in the vehicle.

Fire crews from Hartley Wintney, Fleet and Basingstoke were called to the scene to free the woman and extinguish a fire in the engine bay of the Mini.

Once freed from the car, the woman was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital’s major trauma unit having sustained injuries to her wrist, ankle, leg and head injuries, along with burns from the fire.

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) sent rapid response vehicle, two ambulances, Hazardous Area Response Team and the air ambulance to the scene.

The van ended up on its side on the carriageway with the two male occupants sustaining minor injuries. They were both taken to Frimley Park Hospital following initial treatment at the scene.
