BASINGSTOKE ice rink is set to undergo extensive work following concerns raised by users of the facility.

As previously reported in The Gazette, one of the stands at Planet Ice, based in the Leisure Park, has been condemned, the main changing rooms have been closed and the poor condition of the ice has led to people feeling the arena has become unsafe.

Following a recent inspection of the facilities by Peter Brett Surveyors, it has been recommended that extensive work be carried out to ensure the community can continue to use the rink for many years to come.

The surveyors recommended that the south seating block of the rink is closed while work is carried out and hopes all current work will be finished before the Basingstoke Bison take to the ice for the first time in the new season on September 10.

The surveyors said there are two options Planet Ice has to consider for the long term maintenance of the rink.

Either to close the rink and carry out sufficient work to ensure the existing facility can meet expectations or a full-scale refit of the current rink.

A spokesman for Planet Ice said: “It is difficult for the local ice hockey and figure skating community to understand, but this problem has not occurred overnight, nor within the last year.

“The building has had known infrastructure issues for over 20 years and certainly prior to the takeover by Planet Ice.

“We are working with council officials and expert consultants to ensure that the decisions we make now will be the best not just for the immediate future, but also long term.”

Director of Hockey for the Basingstoke Bison, Doug Sheppard, said he is sure the facilities will be ready for his team to defend their English Premier League title once more.

He said: “My role is to ensure a high quality on-ice product, supported by a strong working relationship with Planet Ice.

“The rink has suffered its share of problems in recent months. We are continuing to work hard at resolving the current issues.

“I’m confident Planet Ice will have our rink back to business as usual in the near future, even though there will be some reduction in available seating this season.”
