VILLAGERS marked 100 years since the death of a World War One hero on Monday.

Six ringers completed a quarter peal by striking each of their bells 1,260 times during a special ringing at St Leonard's Church, in Sherfield-on-Loddon, to mark 100 years since local hero Captain John Liddell VC MC died.

Captain Liddell, whose family lived at Sherfield Manor, now Sherfield School, for many years, was killed following an enemy aircraft attac on July 31, 1915 joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at the outbreak of WWI. serving in France.

He was with the Royal Flying Corps and served as a pilot flying RE5 aircraft when, on July 31, 1915, whilst flying on a reconnaissance mission, suffered serious injuries from an enemy aircraft attack.

The 27-year-old died of his injuries on August 31, 1915.

Captain Liddell was awarded the Victoria Cross because he managed to safely land his badly damaged aircraft, despite his injuries,saving the life of his observer/gunner.

In addition to the bell ringing on Monday, A memorial stone was unveiled in the village on July 31 as a reminder of his bravery. as a permanent reminder of his bravery.
