Sir.–With the start of the autumn term fast approaching, I thought readers would be interested in information about the Government’s ‘Raising the Participation Age’ policy.

This will, of course, be of particular interest to parents of school age children.

Young people leaving school are now required, by law, to participate in education, training or work with training, until their 18th birthday.

The policy is not about raising the school leaving age, it is about offering young people more options for learning so they can decide whether to continue learning in school or college or through a job with training, such as an apprenticeship.

The aim is to give all young people the opportunity to develop their skills, enabling them to get a good quality job with career prospects, or a place at university.
