PEOPLE over the age of 55 are being offered free swimming lessons to improve their water confidence.

The popular swimming sessions, which have seen over 120 people take part over the past year, will start at Basingstoke Sports Centre on Thursday, June 18.

The 10-week course is aimed at beginners but it is also open to those wanting to learn new strokes or improve their technique.

The participants complete the course, they will receive a free 30-day pool pass and will be given the opportunity to book on the Sports Centre’s regular lesson programme.

Councillor Cathy Osselton, the council’s Cabinet member for partnerships, said: “Learning to swim or building up confidence in the water provides a wonderful opportunity to improve people’s health and wellbeing without excessive stress on bones or joints.

“With this course we not only want to encourage people to try a new form of exercise but also meet new people to both socialise and exercise with after the course has finished.”
