TWELVE young adults from the Basingstoke branch of the Prince's Trust braved the wind and rain to revamp the garden area at Popley Fields Community Centre.

And as a result of their hard work the local community - and the children who attend the Treasure Island nursery, which is located inside the community centre - now have somewhere colourful and exciting to visit.

Over the years the garden had become overgrown, but the team, all aged between 16 and 25, managed to clear the area, replant the gardens, dig three vegetable patches and create a sensory area.

In order to complete the project, the young adults raised more than £750 through a variety of challenges, including a sponsored abseil off a 100ft aqueduct in Dartmoor, Devon, and by packing bags in local supermarkets.

They also received a donation of £500 from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and £200 from Sentinel Housing Association.

The official handover of the completed garden took place at a ceremony attended by borough park ranger Liane Green.

In a joint statement, the team said: "It was great to do our community project because the nursery children get something out of it and it is very rewarding for us as the volunteers who completed the project."

The aim of the 12-week Prince's Trust Team Programme is for members to gain new skills, improve their confidence and earn national qualifications.
