THE opening of a road through a busy business park may be delayed by talks with utility companies.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council says the road through Basing View, which was closed so work could start on building a new multi-million pound John Lewis at home and Waitrose store, may not open at the end of May as planned.

However, the council is pleased work is on schedule for the new 47,5000 sq ft John Lewis at home and 25,000 sq ft Waitrose food store to open later this year.

Laura Taylor of the borough council said: “Building the new stores at Basing View is a very complex project, involving the re-routing of a major road into Basingstoke. Some delays can be involved due to this complexity.

“Our development partners Muse and their contractor Bowmer and Kirkland are continuing negotiations with utility companies regarding the relocation of their equipment, which could have an impact on the road opening date.

“We are not aware of any impact on the store opening schedule.”

The new combined store, only the second of its kind in the UK, will create 330 jobs."
