“IT’S a miracle we are all alive,” were the words of a Basingstoke woman whose car was involved in an accident with a police vehicle.

The woman, who does not want to be identified, was pulling right out of Park Lane in Old Basing, onto the A30, at around 9.15pm on Saturday, April 11 when she said the police car came out of nowhere.

She added: “It came up the hill with lights flashing. The next thing I knew was it had gone into me. It was horrific and it’s a miracle that we are all alive.

There were four people in the car. We were all injured.”

The fire brigade and ambulance service were called to the incident and at least one person had to be cut free.

Five people were injured in the crash and one of the passengers in the Volkswagen was taken to hospital with broken bones.

The driver, who suffered shock and bruising, claims the police car was not using its sirens, but said its lights were flashing, adding: “I’m almost certain that if there had been sirens it wouldn’t have happened. I was at a stop line and if you hear a siren you don’t move anywhere until you work out where it is.”

She added: “Two of us in the front were able to get out of the car. We were left sitting on a wall shaking .”

She tried not to watch as her friends were cut free, adding: “I could only just hold myself together.” She said her car was severely damaged.

Hampshire Constabulary said an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the crash, and that the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission for review.
