DOZENS of families took part in a popular sporting event in Oakley, which gave villagers the chance to try out different activities.

The third Oakley Sports Weekend saw 12 sporting clubs and groups offer taster sessions, with many provided free-of-charge.

Oakley Bowling Club opened its doors to the public, inviting people to try out bowling on the green at Malshanger.

Oakley Pedalers ran a one-hour leisure cycle around the village, and Oakley Cricket Club offered coaching for young people aged eight to 16.

The highlight of the weekend was the fun run, held at Oakley Junior School and the Peter Houseman Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon.

It is the second year the fun run has been held as part of the sports weekend, organised by Oakley Community Association.

A total of 52 adults and 73 children took part in the run, and could chose from distances of 1km, 5km or the challenging 10km.

Around 40 volunteers and club representatives helped make the weekend possible.

Georgina Grace, chair of the association, said: “This year saw more items being added for the younger members of the community including a 1km off-road run and cavemen kids, together with a Jolly Jumper bouncy castle.

“There was a small charge for the fun run, but all other events were provided free of charge to give everyone the opportunity to take part.”

She added: “For the third year running the weather was kind. The new school term in Oakley will start with some very weary children looking forward to the opportunity to sit down at school!”
