THE opening hours at a recycling centre in Basingstoke will reduce in a bid to save Hampshire County Council more than £150,000.

The changes to the Hosuehold Waste Recycling Centre, in Wade Road, Daneshill, will change from April 1 this year, and will see a two-hour reduction in opening times this summer.

The changes come after the county council ran a public consultation and analysis of the 24 recycling centres it runs.

Peak times for all centres took place during the mid morning and early afternoon, the county council said.

Councillor Sean Woodward, executive member for economy, transport and environment, said: “We’ve looked at what changes we need to make to maintain this service at a time when we need to save more than £100million from the council’s overall budget and our grant from Government is nearly half what it was a few years ago.

“I am pleased to say that the changes we will be making mean that none of the recycling centres will be closed down to meet the required budget savings for 2015.”

From April 1 to September 30, the Basingstoke centre will open from 9am to 6pm, down from 8am to 7pm last year.

It will open an hour later than normal between October 1 and February 28, from 9am to 4pm, and again between March 1 and March 31, from 9am to 5pm.
