THE MP for North East Hampshire will lead a debate tomorrow at Westminster on the fight for justice for a group of sub-postmasters.
James Arbuthnot MP will hold the adjournment debate in Westminster Hall tomorrow at 2.30pm.
It comes a week after he announced he had lost faith in the Post Office’s commitment to resolve the cases of a group of sub-postmasters who say they were wrongly accused of false accounting.
The group, which includes former South Warnborough sub-postmaster Jo Hamilton, claim errors with the Horizon computing system led to discrepancies in their accounting, which in turn led to some being prosecuted for false accounting and theft.
The Post Office set up a mediation scheme for those cases that gave rise to concern, following a report on the claims by a firm of accountants.
But Mr Arbuthnot said: “In recent months MPs have discovered that the Post Office was using procedures of that mediation scheme to argue that most of the cases giving rise to concern should not, despite what was agreed with MPs, be permitted to go through mediation.
“This was done without the Post Office telling MPs they were doing it. I therefore have written to the Post Office to say that I no longer have faith in the Post Office Board’s commitment to a fair resolution of this issue.
“I shall be continuing my campaign for justice in other ways.”
An adjournment debate is a general debate without requiring the House of Commons to vote.
