OVER 2,000 fixed penalty notices were issued for driving offences in the Basingstoke and Deane area last year, new figures have shown.

Road safety charity Brake released figures yesterday, as it launched its Road Safety Week.

In Basingstoke and Deane, 2,328 fixed penalty notices were issued for speeding and 27 for careless driving, which became a fixed penalty offence in August 2013.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake, said: “When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness.”

Brake has released figures showing how many fixed penalty notices were issued by postcode area last year.

The figures relate to the home address of the offender, not the location where the offence occurred.

In the Basingstoke area, the majority of drivers issued with fines for careless driving came from the RG22 postcode, which covers areas including Kempshott, Hatch Warren and Beggarwood.

The same postcode area had the most drivers caught speeding, at 467.

The postcode area of RG25, which covers Oakley, Overton and North Waltham, had the fewest fixed penalty notices issued for speeding, at 150.
