THE streets of Basingstoke were transformed into a sea of flashing bunny ears as hundreds of walkers took part in the annual St Michael’s Hospice Moonlight Walk.

Around 350 people took part in the event last Saturday – almost 100 more than completed the inaugural moonlight walk last year.

Although the majority of walkers were women, some men and children also made their way around the 8.5-mile course, which took in Basingstoke Leisure Park, Kempshott, South Ham and Viables.

Most of those taking on the challenge wore pink clothing and flashing bunny ears, which could be purchased at the start of the event, and some made sure they really stood out with a huge variety of fancy dress outfits.

There was a team of walkers clad in pyjamas, characters from The Simpsons, Disney characters, and teams dressed in onesies, tutus and specially designed T-shirts.

Walkers gathered in Porchester Square, in Festival Place, before the 10pm start, and were led through a warm-up by professionals from Fitness First.

Iain Cameron, director of income at the hospice, in Aldermaston Road, then took to the stage to thank everyone for taking part, and gave a special mention to various teams and individuals who had raised large sums of cash.

After name-checking companies and groups including De La Rue, Loddon Social Enterprise and Highfield Park, he said: “Our biggest thanks has to go to all of you – it is great to see so many people here for the first time tonight.”
