Sir.–Can I please draw readers’ attention to two upcoming events commemorating the centenary of the start of the First World War, in Whitchurch next week.

Starting at 10am, on Saturday, August 2, Whitchurch Town Hall will host an exhibition of information and artefacts related to the conflict.

Central to the exhibition will be a display of information on each of the 64 men commemorated on the town’s First World War memorial. The Mayor and Mayoress of Whitchurch will be in attendance for the opening.

Whitchurch Town Council, History Society and Royal British Legion have all been active in putting this event on.

Then, on Monday, August 4, there will also be a night-time candlelight vigil and short service at the Town Hall (please bring a candle if you like) to mark the exact time that war was declared, as part of the Royal British Legion’s Lights Out event.

The commemoration will begin at 10.15pm. All are welcome.

–Ron Cook, Whitchurch History Society.
