Federation describes Mrs Miller as "an outstanding MP for Basingstoke"

Basingstoke Gazette: Pic by PA Pic by PA

MARIA Miller “is an outstanding MP for Basingstoke”, the Hampshire Conservative Federation has claimed.

The group is backing the beleaguered Mrs Miller and described recent suggestions that she has not paid tax correctly as “ridiculous and groundless”.

In a statement, put out today by the chairman of the federation, David Parkinson the group said the MP “will not be resigning.”

The statement reads: “At the beginning of February, Basingstoke Conservative Party members on the governing body of the Hampshire Conservative Federation re-selected The Rt. Hon. Maria Miller, MP to be the Conservative Party candidate in the 2015 General Election.

“They will, of course, continue to support Maria as the best choice for Basingstoke electors.

“Maria Miller has delivered some major government policies and delivered for the people of Basingstoke. “There was a 16 month parliamentary inquiry and both the committee and the independent commissioner dismissed the central allegation made by a Labour MP.

“Both have made it clear they are in agreement that there is no case to answer.

“Maria Miller has accepted the Committee’s recommendations in full and has unreservedly apologised in the House of Commons for her approach to the matter which the Committee felt was too legalistic. “Maria will not be resigning since the inquiry cleared her of the allegation.

“Maria herself identified and has already repaid £5,800; this was not part of the Commissioner’s inquiry. “With regard to the sale of her house in London, Maria always pays tax in accordance with HMRC rules and any suggestion to the contrary is both ridiculous and groundless.

“She is an outstanding MP for Basingstoke and has our full support.”

Oh, that's all right then. I thought there were serious questions to answer about the £45000 of public funds she took that she was not entitled to. I thought there was some misunderstanding as to where she really lived and whether her parents really lived there as well. There is also something in the back of my mind about threatening behaviour! It will come to me in a minute.

'She is an outstanding MP for Basingstoke and has our full support'
Is that 'outstanding' as in still to be dealt with?

Have your own house in London, kids in London, parents in London, partner works in London, you work in London ......... you rent a place in your constituency. Logic says to me the place you rent in Basingstoke is your second home .....not the one in London.
It's 45 mins by train, so a second home is hardly vital.
The sole purpose of claiming in her London home in my view is to make money...at our expense.
The fact that she can't see anything wrong in what she has done, the fact that the local Conservatives think she has done nothing wrong and most of the Conservative government think she's done nothing wrong, just illustrates that they all hold the general public and taxpayer in contempt.
Not illegal? No, but is immoral, underhand and manipulative practice, and arrogance and a patronising attitude admirable attributes for a politician ?
I for one think not.
She needs to say sorry, resign and, if I was in that situation, I would want to crawl away and hide through shame and embarrassment.
Because that is what I believe she is .... an embarrassment.

Whilst working alongside Ian Duncan Smith (welfare reform) she demonised those on benefit and she picked the pockets of the disabled. Cameron wanted us to hug a hoodie and now the Tories want us to embrace a benefit cheat that has inflicted so much hardship on the less well of.
They should open up public pathway thought her new home as the taxpayer helped to pay for it.

She has brought shame on Basingstoke and should go.

Officially Basingstoke Conservatives are backing Maria but let me inform you as someone who knows the party only too well that party members are furious about this. A member of Maria's inner circle (who shall remain nameless) has told me that there is even talk about de-selecting her ahead of the May 2015 General Election.

This is exactly why I walked out of the Conservative Party in 2012 because of the the party's callous disregard for ordinary working people who could all but dream of owning a second home let alone having one gratis the tax payer. So of course you may take the view that I have a political axe to grind but please trust me when I tell you that many of my friends still within Conservative Party are incandescent with rage over this affair. It isn't just the original alleged over-claim of expenses but her arrogant disregard of the investigation process that has sent the Tory activists into a spin.

Furthermore, a contact of mine within the ruling Conservative Group of the Borough Council has said today that the local Conservative party is in meltdown not just over this but the fact that the Conservatives have effectively lost their ruling majority following the snap resignation of one of their Councillors on Monday following questions being raised about where his main residence is located ie: not even in Hampshire!

So it would appear that both locally and nationally the Conservatives cannot be trusted and that they have learned nothing from the previous scandals about MPs expenses, duck houses and all. Austerity is apparently good so long as you're not one of the hard working families that need to be austere.

It's your choice on 22nd May! Please use your vote.

I just would like to know the names of the Basingstoke Conservative's in the Basingstoke Conservative Association who've wholeheartedly supported Maria Miller. Who there is prepared to own up to supporting greed, avarice, threats, obstruction and theft? Not to mention 'lobbying' to get even more money back????
I have never ever seen such an almighty responsive in the columns from so many disgusted Basingstoke people. Maria you've badly let down Basingstoke, but really you don't even live here, we are just a photo-call opportunity and once-formerly a 'safe seat', hopefully for not much longer.
Basingstoke disowns you!!

Time to Party

Great news at 07:22 this morning .... Maria Miller has resigned !!! I hope this also means she will stand down as MP for Basingstoke, but I very much doubt it. That will be for the voters in the next election to take care of. All she has to do now is make a real apology and pay back the full £45K and we can wave a long a happy goodbye to the woman who took Basingstoke for a ride for so long. Goodbye Maria Miller, you won't be missed.

Not seen anything from the Conservitives campaigning locally for 3 years and I do not agree with the Lib/Lab Pro EU stance... clearly they are out of touch and become arrogant and complacent in their ''safe seat'' come on people vote for the party which has had no involvement in the expenses scandals!

Please read in the newspapers all of the behaviour and actions of our MP. It was shocking and only the leniency of Parliament to its own have probably stopped her going to face must more serious charges. She broke many of the rules!!

She has acted disgracefully, fraudulently and obstructed the truth. She has let us down badly and she has admitted it.
