FANCY dress fun involving plenty of pram pushing proved to be an eye-catching spectacle in Hartley Wintney.

The Hartley Wintney Pram Race drew hundreds of people to the centre of the village to watch teams in fancy dress push their modified prams around a circuit by the cricket green.

The competitors had to complete laps of the figure-of-eight circuit, stopping along the way for glasses of water, with at least one person sat in the pram.

Teams included one dedicated to the musical film Grease, while another dressed as Hogwarts school pupils from the Harry Potter series.

Team Pramborghini, made up of villagers Richard Blore, Graham Mercer, Ian Edwards, Jeremy Baily Gibson and Max Bourne, took part in the pro race for the second year running.

Team captain Mr Mercer, 54, said: “It is a lot of fun and for a good cause. Our 12-year-old pilot has grown since last year so we’ve had to make a bigger cockpit for him.”

The event, based on an old village tradition, was in its third year after a 20-year break.

This year, it raised money for The Matthew Elvidge Trust, the mental health charity based in the village, and the construction of the hall at St John’s Church, in Fleet Road.

Organiser Gary Cook said: “It has gone very well, which is down to the weather conditions.

“The event has grown gradually over the past three years and what we need to do now is let people know about it sooner so they can build their prams.”
