AN HISTORIC church opened its doors to the public as part of a heritage programme of events.
The Churches Conservation Trust welcomed visitors to St Nicholas Church, in Freefolk, as part of the Heritage Open Days programme for 2013.
Visitors were able to admire the building’s leaded windows, ancient tiled flooring and layers of historic wall paintings, and could also try to spot bats living inside the church.
The bat population inspired the conservation team to set up a trail for young visitors, with clues to follow to find toy bats hidden around the church, with prizes given out to those completing the hunt.
Gabriella Misuriello, conservation project manager at The Churches Conservation Trust, said: “With natural roosting spots for bats declining in recent decades, churches are really popular places for bats to hang about. As these native nocturnal creatures often make churches their home, the building makes a great place to learn more about them.”
