POLICE are investigating an incident in which a car overturned and a lorry caught fire on the M3.
Officers were called at around 2.30pm on July 31 to reports that a Skoda Fabia had rolled over on the northbound carriageway, near Junction 10, and came to rest in bushes at the side of the road. Four people in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to hospital as a precaution.
Initial reports suggested the car had crashed with a flat-bed lorry, but police are now unsure if this is what happened.
A lorry later pulled over on to the hard shoulder further up the carriageway at Junction 8 Popham where it caught fire. Three appliances and 14 firefighters tackled the incidents, one from Winchester and two from Basingstoke. They used compressed air foam to put out the flames.
As a result of the fire, the M3 northbound was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.
PC John Bownes from the Whitchurch Roads Policing unit said: “We are investigating whether or not there was any contact between any vehicles and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw any of the vehicles involved driving prior to it.”
Anyone with information should contact the roads policing unit on 101.
