APOLLO Theatre Company bring a brand new production of classic children's novel Carrie's War to Basingstoke next week.
The large ensemble cast and fantastic set will bring the world of Nina Bawden's novel to life.
Director Tim Astley explains: "With a play like Carrie’s War which has many different settings, it is important to not complicate your set and overcrowd the stage.
"We have chosen to create a simple multi-level set, which will allow seamless movement from scene to scene, be it in a cosy kitchen or a spooky forest.
This, put together with lighting and sound, will really create the atmosphere of a small Welsh village during World War II, whilst allowing the audience to still use their imagination."
Emma Reeves has captured the spirit of the novel and created a faithful adaptation. Those who know the book well will not be disappointed with this production.
The cast were lucky enough to be joined by Emma in rehearsal to discuss the script.
Amy Hamlen, who plays Carrie, reflected: "Having Emma join us in rehearsals was so helpful. It’s not often you get to meet the playwright, and it was great to ask her any questions we had about our characters, and learn how Emma came to write the adaptation.
"It gave us an insight into the play that you very rarely get."
"It’s been great fun getting to know the play, especially learning all the Welsh songs and dialogue. Now we can’t wait to get on stage and bring the play to audiences!"
See Carrie's War in The Haymarket from May 22-24.
