NORTHERN Broadsides (A Government Inspector) returns to Winchester’s Theatre Royal with a star-studded cast to perform Rutherford & Son.
The play is set in the Edwardian era of industrial expansion and social aspiration and explores the relationship between a tyrannical Northern factory-owner and his long-suffering family. The success of the family glassworks business takes precedence over all, and soon cracks appear in a household run on fear.
As Rutherford’s patriarchal authority is challenged, family mutiny threatens to destroy his world and his factory, with catastrophic results.
Director Sir Jonathan Miller, co-creator of Beyond The Fringe with Alan Bennet, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, is one of the world’s leading opera and theatre directors. He will also appear in An Audience With Jonathan Miller at Theatre Royal on April 12.
Barrie Rutter (John Rutherford) has been artistic director of Northern Broadsides since he founded the company in 1992. Wendi Peters (Mrs Henderson) is best known as Cilla Battersby-Brown in Corrie, and Kate Anthony (Ann) is known for playing Aunty Pam Hobsworth in the same TV show.
Rutherford & Son runs at Theatre Royal Winchester from Tuesday, April 30 to Saturday, May 4. Tickets are available from 01962 840440 or online at theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk.
