THERE are just four weeks to go until BATS take over The Haymarket for 11 days with their colourful production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

The family musical, based on the Oscar-winning animated film, is being staged by the Basingstoke Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS) from November 3 to 13.

Twelve performances, including two matinees, promise plenty for the eye and ear to feast on with great characters and memorable songs, including Be Our Guest, Gaston and Beauty and the Beast.

Colin Webb, BATS chairman, said: “It’s a fantastic privilege to perform a brilliant show that’s not been available to us before.

“If you’ve seen the film or the West End show, you’ll know it’s got a feelgood factor that appeals to the whole family. We hope children will bring their grandparents along to enjoy the show together – and hold their hand in the scary bits!”

The story follows a selfish young prince, who is turned into a Beast by an enchantress only to become human if he can learn to love and be loved in return. Along comes Belle dreaming of a better life, but can she see that beauty is more than skin deep?

Director Ray Jeffery and musical director Neil Streeter have been working with a cast of more than 30 talented local performers.

They will be bringing to life some of the best-loved Disney characters, including singing teapot Mrs Potts, talking clock Cogsworth, dancing candlestick Lumiere, arrogant muscle-man Gaston, the fearsome Beast and of course, the lovely Belle.

BATS is presenting young talents Emily Chalmers as Belle, a first major role for Nick Brannam, as Lumiere, and Jack Juniper as Gaston. Both young men started out in BATS’ youth company Next Gen.

Familiar faces like Steve Westwood, Theresa Lunn and Tracey Gonzato will also be appearing in the show.

Webb said: “We’ve also got some amazing company numbers, stunning costumes and a full professional orchestra. It’s one of the most ambitious shows BATS has ever staged and audiences are in for a real treat!”

Tickets to see the show are priced from £15, with concessions available, and can be booked by calling 01256 844244 or online at anvilarts.org.uk.
