BASINGSTOKE’S Kala the Arts has been awarded a one-off grant of £3,500 from Hampshire County Council.

The money will enable the South Asian dance group to appoint a project coordinator to support the development of income generating opportunities and train volunteers.

In addition, it will build on their new partnership project with Basingstoke College of Technology, where they are now based.

Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside Cllr Keith Chapman, who awarded the sum on May 15’s decision day, said: "I’m pleased to be able to give them some support to be used to develop their service. This complements our work in many ways and the investment we make that supports the wider economic, cultural and social wellbeing for Hampshire residents and all the benefits that brings.

“It is important in the current economic climate that organisations are helped to become self sustaining and less dependent on us for funding, particularly as financial pressures continue and the County Council needs to make significant cuts due to loss of Government grant.”
