ON JULY 6, there was a bring-and-buy sale and a talk on “Recycling in Basingstoke and Deane” by Kevin Dennis.

Kevin told members that most of the contents of the black bins are burned at the Chineham incinerator, which seems preferable to landfill.

As for the green bins, the contents go to material recovery reprocessing.

There will be some restriction on black bins from October 1, as the council is joining with Hart District Council.

It is not certain how this will affect everybody. Kevin had a selection of plastic containers and explained which were suitable for recycling.

Garden waste is composted on a large site on the road to Alton and is for sale as ‘Pro-Grow’ at a reasonable price. There were many questions, some complaints about the bin men which he promised to address, while allowing that their job is hard. There was also praise from a member for the help given by workers at the waste facility in Wade Road.

Outings to come – August 13, Loseley Park; September 16, Exbury Gardens. For more information, please contact Kate on 01256 328791.
