AT the meeting on June 1, we had another enthusiastic talk from Gwen Barton, this time on ‘Spices, Tea and Waterways of India’.

The area was Kerala in southern India, a peaceful place where all religions are tolerated. The countryside is beautiful, with large tea plantations, mountains and lakes.

There were visits to Erewikulam National Park, an elephant park (these animals being particularly revered in this part of the world) and The Greenland Spice Garden as seen on TV when visited by Monty Don. There was also an amazing theatrical performance called the Kaperkali with costumes and make-up astonishingly over the top.

The next outings are to Ham House, London (National Trust) on July 13, and Losely Park on August 18. Please contact Kate on 01256 328791 if interested.

All retired civil servants and their partners are welcome at our meetings held on the first Wednesday of each month at 10am at Brookvale Village Hall, Lower Brook Street, Basingstoke. Coffee, biscuits and tea are available.
