Manager Luke Williams admitted to being put through the wringer as Peterborough reached the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2009 after beating Barnsley in a penalty shoot-out.
A brilliant all-League One tie was settled by Harrison Jones’ spot-kick after Barnsley’s Luke Alker had seen his effort saved by Posh goalkeeper Alex Bass.
Williams said: “It was a roller coaster – I feel like I’ve aged about 10 years, but at the end of it we’ve come out victorious so I feel a bit better now.
“It was just chaotic, it was like a game from the mid-80s because there was just nobody in the middle of the pitch.
“You could have put a (basketball) hoop at each end and I think it wouldn’t have made any difference. It was just madness, but hopefully the fans went home happy.”
After a madcap first half finished 2-2, Reyes Cleary’s second goal of the night looked to have won it for Barnsley but Danny Ormerod’s 88th-minute header meant the tie at the Weston Homes Stadium went the distance.
Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel said: “Peterborough never gave up then what happened in the penalty shoot-out can happen.
“We won against Wigan [in the first round], lost today, but I’m not unhappy with our performance today.
“We wanted to react from the last two results in the league (heavy defeats to Stevenage and Plymouth), which is what happened.
“This was a good step, we would have preferred to have gone home with a win today, but maybe on Saturday (against Leicester).”
