THE Basingstoke Bison collected their second piece of silverware for the season, as the league champions won the South One play-off crown after beating the visiting Peterborough Phantoms 2-1.

The final between the two sides was tied 1-1, going into the second leg, which proved to be another tight contest.

An even opening 20 minutes saw Bison man of the match Roman Malinik have the best two early chances.

So, it was no surprise when he opened the scoring at 10:07, as he converted a pass from Grant Rounding at the back post.

The Phantoms should have levelled things at 13:34, but Will Weedon tipped a Scott Robson shot wide Just before the first buzzer, Peterborough’s Nathan Pollard made the most of a kind defection off the boards, but Dean Skinns was equal to his shot from the left wing.

The game was then delayed for an hour, after problems with the Zamboni in resurfacing the ice.

When the second session did start, the Bison had on the powerplay, in which Dan Scott stung the glove of King with a shot and then James Ferrara went close shorthanded.

Soon after, Ivan Antonov from the high slot went close and then Aaron Connolly tested Peterborough netminder Euan King.

The visitors then equalised at 31:20, as a bad bounce off the ice set Leigh Jamieson clear and he slotted the puck across to Edward Knaggs, who in turn found man of the match Ales Padelek who scored from close range.

The Herd hit back as two minutes later, as Paul Petts and Dan Davies combined for Malinik to slot home his second under the body of King.

Malinik went close to completing his hat-trick, before Nathan Salem was denied by a great save from Skinns.

The final period, saw the home control it with Karpov going close twice, while Stuart Mogg and Dan Scott were denied by saves.

With 68 seconds left, Peterborough called a time-out and pulled their goalie, but were unable to force an equaliser.

The victory means the Bison will face Sheffield Steeldogs in the second game at Coventry on Saturday, which starts at 5pm, with Peterborough taking on the northern winners Telford at 1pm.

The winners will then decide the national champions on Sunday at 4.30pm.
