SANDER de Riemer won his first Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League Close Championships men’s singles title beating Alex Garlick in front of a packed out crowd at the Basingstoke Rugby Club in what was one of the highest quality finals for many years.
The Dutchman took the first set, but Garlick hit back, winning the second set 13-11 and led 10-9 in the third, but failed to convert his set point and, after a bit of luck from the net, de Riemer won it 11-4, 11-13, 13-11, 7-11, 11-6.
In the semi-finals de Riemer beat former champion Tony Palaczky 13-11, 11-9, 11-5, then Garlick, who beat another ex-champ Peter Matthews, saw off Norman Swift, who had accounted for defending champion Sean Pickin 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6.
