BASINGSTOKE born cricketer Chris Wood was once again in action for England under-19s in the second Test match with their Bangladesh counterparts at Derby.

The medium pace bowler turned 19 last month and, along with making his England under-19 Test debut, he has been given a contract with Hampshire for the rest of the summer.

The Basingstoke and North Hants player helped the young Lions to an excellent 10 wicket victory in the first Test match played in Scarborough.

The teenager, who opened the bowling, returned match figures of 4-103, taking two wickets in each innings and also scored a quickfire 14, which included a six and a four.

Talking after England’s emphatic victory, the local player said: “I was pleased with my performance on what was my Test debut as I played in some one-day game out in South Africa earlier this year.”

The medium-pace bowler admitted his match figures could have been even better.

“I had a couple of dropped catches on my bowling so it could have gone better, but that is all part of the game. It was a flat pitch which didn’t really help me so in the end I was happy with what happened.”

Batting a long way down the order, Wood managed to score 14 from 20 balls, which included a six and four.

Speaking about that he said: “When I went in we were looking to score quick runs, so hence why I scored so quickly.”

Wood’s late contribution helped England score 502 in the their first innings, with Leicestershire's Joshua Cobb top scoring with 220, while Wood’s Hampshire teammates James Vince (22) and Hamza Riazuddin (95) also chipped in.

In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 270.

Wood took the first wicket, before Durham’s Scott Brothwick took 5-70.

Forced to follow-on, the Asian side were bowled out for 276 with Wood taking the first and last wicket while, in-between, Yorkshire’s Azeem Rafiq took 6-90.

England completed the win reaching 47 without loss.

Wood’s England under-19 Test debut came just days after the 19-year-old learnt he had earned a contract with Hampshire for the rest of the summer.

He first represented Hampshire at under-10 level, and at 17 made his debut for the Hampshire Academy side. This season he has played in nearly all the second eleven games.

Wood is determined to make the most of the opportunity and said: “I am thrilled with being given a contract by Hampshire and now it is up to me to make the most of it “I think being selected for England under-19 has helped and I have also now finished my course at Alton College.”

After the two game Test match series England will face Bangladesh in five one day matches which are at Grace Road, Leicester on July 18 and 19, Northampton (July 21) and the Hove (July 23 and 24).

Then there are also two Twenty20 games at Sleaford, Lincolnshire on July 28 and 29.
