FORMER Saints assistant Danny Rohl has pulled off the unlikely by keeping Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

The Owls sat bottom in the second tier when the German took over back in October, but a 2-0 win over Sunderland has seen them stamp their card for the Championship next season.

The Owls looked destined for League One when they picked up just three points from their opening 13 matches of the season, with no Championship side having previously survived from such a miserable position.

The final-day win at the Stadium of Light, which came courtesy of first-half goals from Liam Palmer and Josh Windass, means Wednesday lost just three of their final 14 matches, a run that enabled them to haul themselves to safety despite having spent virtually all of the season in the bottom three.

Rohl, who worked with at Bayern Munich and the German national team, replaced Xisco Munoz after just 11 games of the season. It is a great achievement for the young coach, who is in his first role as a senior manager.

Rohl departed St Mary’s in 2019 having worked as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s assistant manager in the Premier League.
