Basingstoke & North Hants are believed to have disciplined seven players – one understood to have been suspended for five matches and so side-lined into next season – following their controversial Southern Premier League Division 1 visit to Rowledge on August 14.

The May’s Bounty club has yet to name the players disciplined or confirm any details of the internal action taken, but of the side that won by 17 runs at Rowledge, only three of the same team – Matt Deadman, Ash Neal (who was captain) and youngster Shantanu Shahane - played on Saturday against Andover.

It follows action taken after senior club officials reviewed umpire reports of alleged on-field behavioural disciplinary breaches at Church Road.

However, the bulk of that Basingstoke side from Rowledge was back playing again in Sunday’s T20 Plate semi-final victory over Totton & Eling.

The seriously weakened Basingstoke side suffered a crushing 184-run defeat by Andover, believed to be the heaviest competitive loss in the club’s long history.

Andover openers Glynn Treagus (73) and the emerging Sam Ashman shared a stand of 121, the partnership being broken by teenage spinner Shantanu Shahane, who first had Treagus caught and soon afterwards cleaned bowled a bemused Hampshire’s Lewis McManus for five.

Flamboyant all-rounder Babu Veettil didn’t waste the opportunity to score some quick runs and smashed 46 off 18 balls – 42 of them in boundaries, six fours and three big sixes !

Another promising ‘Stoke youngster Neil Shelar eventually had Veettil caught, while Shahane emerged with enormous credit – figures of 4-33 from his eight overs.

Andover went on to pile up 256-7 off 40 overs and bowl Basingstoke out for 72, with only Deadman (21), who had earlier taken 2-42 in a rare bowl, top scoring.

The outcome of the one-sided match at May’s Bounty had significant ramifications in the SPL1 relegation zone, with Portsmouth plunged into second from bottom spot and now needing to beat Sarisbury Athletic in their last match at St Helen’s on Saturday to avoid the drop.

Andover, who wind up their programme against relegated St Cross Symondians II, have hauled themselves out of the drop zone, for the time being at least.

Equally weakened Basingstoke seconds suffered a nine-wicket thumping from Division 3 rivals Langley Manor at Knellers Lane.

Veteran Leon Nurse was among the players called up by Basingstoke, who were dismissed for 140, with Scott Dyer (37) and teenager Matt Griffiths (35) picking up the pieces after Simon Peters (3-16) had helped reduce the visitors to 56-6.

All four Basingstoke sides were beaten, with the third team bowled off the top of Hampshire League Division 3N after being dismissed for 174 (Callum Coombs 59) and losing by five wickets to new leaders Wherwell.

Basingstoke 4th XI were thrashed by nine wickets by Compton & Chandler’s Ford after being shot out for 95.
