A MEMORIAL match has been organised for Peter Raynbird.

Peter spent more than 60 years as a Basingstoke and District Football League member, holding various positions - including Secretary for more than 50 years.

He was also made president of Basingstoke Town Football Club under then Chairman Terry Brown.

Peter died in February aged 95.

The game will be Basingstoke Town Vets against Basingstoke League Vets.

Steve Frangou will take charge of Town Vets, while Wayne Barber and Darren Hutchins will be at the helm of League Vets.

It will take place on Saturday, June 5, at the Winklebury Football Complex, with an 11.45am kick-off.

Entry is a minimum donation of £4, but is free for OAPs and under-16s. All proceeds are going to Basingstoke Town Community Football Club.

A statement from the Basingstoke and District Football League said: "Peter was a hugely respected man. He helped promote football at all levels in the town and his weekly write up in the Gazette covering the Basingstoke and District Saturday League was extremely popular."

Basingstoke Town FC said: "Peter was widely and rightly regarded as a local legend and a great servant to football, and of course, our club. A thoroughly popular man who dedicated a huge amount of his time, efforts and expertise to local football – which became a greater game due to his involvement."
