IT WAS another win for Basingstoke ladies 4s in their second game of the season against Romsey.

Following on from their last game, Basingstoke started off strongly, with unfortunately, their first goal being disallowed.

Without being deterred The 4s persevered with a fabulous goal, following great interplay between Nell Ruane who ran down the right side before hitting the ball into the D for a waiting Megan Payne to slap it in for Basingstoke’s first.

In the second half, it was a similar start with Basingstoke pushing up into Romsey’s half. A quick run from Payne into the circle, then a pass to Sharon Holden who easily found the back of the net saw Basingstoke leading 2-0, which was the final score.

In the latter stages of the game, there were more opportunities which did not convert, but a good solid performance from the ladies 4s.

Basingstoke ladies 1s, sponsored by KJS Solicitors, were up against Oxford Hawkes in their away game this weekend.

The first half was evenly matched with both sides winning several penalty corners. Neither side could capitalise on these chances with both goalkeepers being tested and making great saves. Oxford put in a period of sustained pressure on Basingstoke’s D and managed to work the ball around to an unmarked player who swept the ball over the line for a goal.

Trailing 1-0 down, Basingstoke stepped up their efforts in the second half. their super speedy Striker Sophie Ferguson was wiped out by Oxford's goalkeeper, which resulted in a penalty flick. Nicola George stepped up to the plate but it was saved to the keeper.

Basingstoke continued to pressurise Oxford in the second and third quarters but just could not penetrate Oxford’s defensive shield as their defence held firm.

In the final quarter Basingstoke, went firing out of the starting blocks. Wave after wave of attacks were repelled by Oxford. However, on turning the ball over, Oxford surged down the pitch overloading Basingstoke at the back and winning a penalty corner. The ball was switched from the top, to the left, then back to the top and was struck beautifully into the back board.

An unfortunate 0-2 loss for Basingstoke in what was an evenly matched encounter. Onwards and upwards in their coming match against Bath Buccaneers.
