BARROW boss David Dunn praised his side after their 1-1 draw with Colchester United.

The Bluebirds’ wait for a first Football League win since 1972 went on despite a positive home performance.

Michael Jones scored a sensational goal to cancel out Noah Chilvers’ first senior goal for the visitors.

Striker Scott Quigley looked good on his return from suspension and hit the post in the second half.

“I thought our performance was excellent,” admitted Dunn. “Without the ball we were good and on the ball we created numerous chances.

“On other days we’re coming away with three points against a very good Colchester team which will cause a lot of teams a lot of problems this year.

“I thought there were some really good positives out there.

“The only thing I was disappointed with was the goal we conceded.

“I think the way the lads bounced back was amazing.

“The lads didn’t drop their heads, they kept going and they got their just rewards.”

The Bluebirds are certainly a work in progress and haven’t looked out of their depth since their long-awaited return to the fourth tier.

Dunn made a host of new signings in the summer and he believes wins aren’t far away once they fully click.

The hosts were unlucky not to nab all three points after missing a host of presentable chances.

Star striker Scott Quigley was a menace throughout the afternoon in his first appearance of the season.

Quigley, last season’s top scorer, served a three-game ban from last term missed an inviting header and hit the post.

“They’re a hungry group of players and we’re going to get better as the season goes on,” said Dunn.

“Let’s be honest we’ve got about 13 or 14 players who have never played football together before.

“We’ve been together about eight weeks now so naturally it takes time. People are getting to know each other, they get better every single day on the training ground.

“We want to improve football players here that’s our aim.

“But the most important thing is that we want to win football matches.

“We seem to be getting punished for every single little mistake we make.

“If we get the performances in then the draws will turn into wins and I firmly believe that.

“We’ve missed players. We’ve still got three or four out. They aren’t going to be squad players either.

“I said to them before the game that the lads have got the shirt now and we have to keep that competitiveness.

“They’ve got the shirt and its up to them to lose it.”
