GOALS from Adam Cornell and Tom Bird saw Hartley Wintney move into the third Round of the Aldershot Cup as they won 2-1 at a freezing Ashford Town ground.

Ashford have been luckless in the Isthmian League and currently sit bottom of the South Central Division, which is one league below the Row.

The Tangerines first meaningful attack on 10 minutes saw them take the lead with a goal of the utmost simplicity.

A throw on the left went to Kelvin Adjei who moved to the goal line and crossed to Daniel Brown who tapped the ball home

For the remainder of the first half the game resembled an attackers versus defenders. practice game with the home side defending stoutly.

Hartley created few chances but came close on 38 minutes when Alex Albert headed a Ty Smith corner against the top of the crossbar.

On 42 minutes the Row pulled level. Nathan Smart made a good burst down the right wing and his cross found Adam Cornell who headed home.

Two minutes later, Joe Grant got free inside the penalty shot and his shot brought an excellent save from the home keeper Joshua Wilson.

The second half carried on very much as the first period with the Row on top.

However very few chances were created and the game looked to be heading for penalties. Then on 83 minutes Hartley took the lead. Tom Bird took a free kick on the right touchline and the ball eluded everyone and hit the inside of the post.

Ashford managed to scramble the ball out but referee Nigel Owen adjudged the ball to have crossed the line.

Two minutes later a ball over the top found Adjei racing in on goal before he was hauled down by a Row defender in the penalty area and a spot kick awarded. Adjei dusted himself down of frost before ballooning his shot over the crossbar.

Hartley's man of the match was Josh Webb.

Hartley are back in league action on Saturday with a trip to Harrow Borough and then on Tuesday night they entertain Salisbury.
