ONLY two games were played on Sunday, the Bernard Cornish Cup clash was a terrific game between the top two teams in Division Two Basingstoke Royals and Hampshire Irons.

Both teams started strong defensively, making scoring chances hard to come by, but it was the Royals who took the lead after 30 minutes.

They struck the post and the rebound fell to Ama Bhuller to tap in from close range, the only score of the half.

For the second week running the Irons knew they had to start the second half quickly against strong opposition to stand any chance of success.

After a good spell of keep-ball down the right, James Arnold struck a deadly cross into the corridor of uncertainty, that was met by Elliot Hobden-Og to level the tie 1-1.

Then Irons took the lead soon after, a Mike Pemberton free-kick from the left was met by Ryan Tucker whose strong header rifled into the roof of the net.

The Irons were forced to soak up some pressure from the Royals, who created some excellent chances to level the scoring, matched by Laurence Wilson at centre back and Mike Tiley in goal, who had to be on top form to keep the Irons ahead of the game.

Gavin Curry made it 3-1 late on with a knuckle ball free-kick from 30 yards that found the top corner and Royals ran out of replies.

A top performance from the Irons and man of the match Ryan Tucker. The result ended a run of three wins in a row for Royals and made it three wins in a row for Irons.

In the Andover Presidents Cup Andover Robins were 8-1 winners over Brookvale United.
